UPA UF
UPA UF is a treatment for uterine fibroids (also known as leiomyoma, uterine myoma or myomata), a common type of non-cancerous hormone-dependent tumor of the female reproductive system. The condition affects between 20-50% of women, and is most frequent in women between the ages of 30 and 50. Approximately 8-16 million women in Europe have fibroids, of which some 800,000 to 3.2 million have symptoms that could require treatment ranging from heavy bleeding and pain to urinary incontinence and infertility. Treatment most frequently consists of surgery and interventional radiology. The market for uterine fibroids is around USD 1 billion.
The product is based on the molecule ulipristal acetate molecule, a new chemical entity which modulates the activity of the progesterone receptor.
After having successfully completed a Phase II clinical trial, HRA Pharma entered a licensing agreement with PregLem, a Swiss specialty biopharmaceutical company, to develop and commercialise ulipristal acetate for gynecological disorders. This product is currently in Phase III clinical development.
